In the middle of the last century, the Japanese Morihei Ueshiba developed a modern martial art. Coming from a samurai family himself, he was trained in sword fighting and the handling of classical weapons, as well as jujutsu. Against the backdrop of the great wars of the century, he realized that the teachings and training of the samurai must be used in a better way to resolve conflicts in a sustainable way than to use violence.
He modified the fighting techniques so that henceforth they were for protection rather than destruction. In contrast to the “art of war” he called his new development “art of peace” or the way of harmony of forces (Aikido). Quickly the art spread all over the planet and found many millions of enthusiastic followers. It is also used in the professional field, e.g. by police forces who have to act in a de-escalating way and should refrain from violence as much as possible. Current social changes, however, threaten to let the art of peace fall into oblivion again.
With this project we have made it our goal to revive interest in the martial art of Aikido. For this we have illuminated both the physical and the philosophical level of the martial art. We created a VR video game and a pilot episode for an anime.
