Using our research we processed Ueshiba’s legacy episode by episode.
Along the timeline of Morihei’s life we created in research-stage, we began wo write a story about the emergence of the martial art Aikido. It was especially important to us to reflect the essence of the martial art in our story.
We created a story structure to keep track of our and character development. Finally, we developed a story outline for multiple episodes.
Due to time constraints, we decided to limit the script and production of the anime to one pilot episode. After developing the story concept of that pilot episode we evaluated different software for writing a script and decided to use “Celtx”. Because none of us have ever written a script, we worked out a Screenplay-CheatSheet, from which the syntax for writing a screenplay and the use of the software, as well as shortcuts, are quickly apparent. After finsihing the script we extracted the most important assets from the script and put them into a separate document to make production easier.
Since the script was written in English, we gave it to several people for revision once it was finished.
Here you can take a look at The Art of Peace: Pilot Episode, a story well-know in the Aikido-world, about a young student of Morihei Ueshiba, who learned about the true essence of aikido through an unusal encounter with a drunk man on a train.
After the script was finally written, storyboards had to be drawn for all 23 scenes as a visual aid for the later animation of characters and camera. We determined in advance how many boards each storyboard would have and what would be depicted on them. For the actual production of the storyboards we used Storyboarder, a storyboarding tool that simplified the creation of the storyboards. For more detailed work we used Photoshop.

To ensure a full first idea of our concept, we decided to create an animated version of our storyboard, set it to music and added sound effects.
